Chunking

Take out ten lots at a time, see what is left, then finish with the times table. Long division, in the order your head can hold.

When it works

The answer is bigger than ten.

Worked through

168 ÷ 7 = 24

  1. 7 × 20 = 140Start with 20 lots of 7.
  2. 168 − 140 = 28Take that off. This is what is left to share.
  3. 28 ÷ 7 = 4How many more 7s fit into it?
  4. 20 + 4 = 24Add the two counts.
